Travel in Korea

Korea is a region of Asia divided into two territories of North and South. South Korea – situated just South of the Korean Peninsula – is the more commonly visited country of the two; a special permit is actually required to be able to travel into North Korea. South Korea is the 20th most visited country in the world. It draws in millions of visitors each year with its bustling cities, beautiful natural landscapes, popular culture and unique cuisine. International tourists can expect to arrive at Incheon International Airport, just outside of Seoul; in 2006, this airport was ranked as the best in the world.

Culture

Korean culture is so rich in history and variety that it would be easy to get lost in it and extend your stay there. It was initially a combination of ancient Korean culture, and the culture of China, but has since developed to take on it's own unique feel. As South Korea has been swept along the wave of industrialization and westernization, the culture has adapted to better suit new lifestyles. Korean pop music is one of the most prevalent newly-westernized factors in it's culture at present - the global success of K-Pop has helped to bring Korean culture to light in a more widespread way.

However, despite this westernization of some aspects of Korean culture and ways of life, there are still various aspects of their lifestyles that incorporate the ancient and traditional customs of their nation. A lot of Korean art is inspired by the natural history of the country - early Korean art was known to emulate the scenery and the landscapes of the nation. Woodwork and ceramics in Korea are also some of its most renowned crafts that date back for thousands of years - both Korean furniture and ceramics are one of the most sought-after and lucrative products for antique-dealers and collectors across the globe.

Cuisine

Korea is renowned for its cuisine which often incorporates spices and flavors as the key ingredient of its dishes. Kimchi is one of the most popular dishes of Korea, a dish made out of the draining, salting, watering and fermenting of vegetables - it is used as a staple, alongside rice, in most Korean dishes.

Korean BBQ is also a dish that must be sampled if you travel to Korea - the meats are marinated in the most beautiful, flavorsome sauces and the final presentation of the dish is so artistic. It's truly a craft. I could compile a list of the top Korean foods to sample and it would barely scratch the surface - but throughout each place you visit in Korea, there is no shortage of street vendors, stalls or cafes in which you can sample these dishes

Cities

Seoul is the capital of Korea and the area that brings in the most amount of tourists each year. It's a city that has perfectly mastered the balance between tradition and modernity. Seoul has something to offer for everybody - there's modern, artistic design and bustling shopping malls, but there's also ancient temples steeped in history. Gyeongbok-gung Palace can be found in Seoul, a centuries-old construct, set against the backdrop of skyscrapers and modern-design buildings. It truly is a unique city

.For those who travel to Korea in search of natural beauty and lush scenery, Seoraksan National Park is definitely the place to visit. It offers some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world - here you can find rocky mountaintops, sprawling pine forests, sparkling lakes and the clearest running streams. It is definitely worth a visit if you're keen on your photography - there are also 2,000 animal species that inhabit this space.

If you're traveling to Korea and looking for a mixture of city life and beautiful landscapes, then Jeju Island should be on your list of places to travel to. Jeju Island offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, alongside lava tunnels and beautiful expanses of greenery. There is the opportunity to explore it's traditional, local culture with a visit to Seongeup Folklore Village, and Jeju also offers a healthy dose of popular culture in the form of the Loveland theme park - an adult's only park that features hundreds of sculptures exploring each facet of human sexuality

Overall, Korea is a hot-spot for tourism due to it's intricate history, famous cuisine, fascinating customs and beautiful scenery. It truly does offer something for anybody who plans to travel - with such a complex and vast culture to explore, maybe one trip to Korea just would not be enough.
